About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Chicago’s vibrant Northside neighborhood, Palace Gate Restaurant offers an authentic journey into the rich flavors of West Africa, with a strong focus on traditional Ghanaian cuisine. This cozy family-run gem serves up a heartfelt menu designed to introduce diners to the diverse and deeply comforting tastes of African cooking.

The dining atmosphere at Palace Gate is intimate and unpretentious, giving a warm, homey vibe that feels like a genuine neighborhood spot rather than a polished commercial venue. While the décor may not be flashy, the true allure here lies in the kitchen where each dish is crafted with care and deep cultural roots.

When it comes to the menu, the standout dishes are a delicious array of West African classics, offering a vibrant mix of textures and bold, layered flavors. Guests rave about the Jollof with Chicken, a beautifully spiced, tomato-rich rice dish that balances vibrant heat with comforting sweetness. The Banku with Tilapia is another must-try, featuring the iconic corn-based Banku – a smooth, slightly sour fermented dough served alongside perfectly fried tilapia, creating a delightful textural contrast.

If you’re seeking something hearty and soul-soothing, the Fufu and Soup dish is a highlight. It pairs soft, chewy plantain fufu with your choice of rich, flavorful soup and meat, allowing you to savor the traditional way of enjoying West African staples at your own pace. Others find joy in the Rice and Carrot Cabbage Stew, which beautifully layers mild sweetness of vegetables with the richness of a savory stew and a side of plantain and shito, a spicy pepper sauce that offers a fiery kick.

For those fond of spicy and bold tastes, the Kelewele - spicy fried plantains seasoned with ginger, garlic, and chili pepper - provides the perfect combination of sweet, heat, and crunch. Meanwhile, peanut butter and light soups add a luscious depth of flavor that is distinctly comforting, highlighting the complex, earthy ingredients typical of the region.

One note for prospective diners: the menu can be a bit challenging to navigate for those new to Ghanaian cuisine, as it currently lacks detailed descriptions and visible pricing, which some reviewers found confusing. It’s suggested to call ahead to confirm opening hours and inquire about dishes, as timing and communication may vary.

While there have been a few concerns about service speed and occasional food temperature issues, many patrons appreciate the authenticity and uniqueness of the flavors, making Palace Gate a valuable destination for adventurous eaters and those seeking a genuine taste of West African culinary tradition in Chicago.

In essence, Palace Gate Restaurant invites you to embrace bold, heartfelt dishes that carry the stories and heritage of Ghanaian culture – a culinary experience both comforting and exciting, best savored with a spirit open to new and vibrant flavors.

Overall Thoughts: This is a small, homey family restaurant serving up traditional, delicious Ghanaian dishes. There was only one other party there when we came for dinner on a Sunday. My only suggestions are around the menu… it’s pretty hard to navigate if you have no prior knowledge of or experience trying Ghanaian cuisine, as there are no descriptions or even prices on the menu. It would’ve definitely been helpful to know the prices before ordering, but the prices seemed overall reasonable when we got the receipt at the end. The server (who seemed to be the owner’s daughter) helped answer any questions we had, and the food came out pretty quick. Otherwise, the food is wonderful and bursting with flavor— would totally recommend! Food I tried: - Kenkey with Fish (4.7/5): I liked this dish best out of everything we ordered. The kenkey itself had great starchy, umami flavor, and its soft, mushy texture paired perfectly with the fish which was crispy, well-fried, and flavorful. Combined the spicy shito and onions and neutral tomato, all the flavors came together perfectly. - Beans (Red Red) with Egg and Plantains (4.5/5): There weren’t a lot of vegetarian options on the menu, but this dish was a delicious, filling option. The beans were full of flavor and the plantains were some of the best I’ve ever had— they were perfectly fried and the oil brought out their maximal sweetness and softness. - Jollof Rice with Chicken (4.6/5): This was another favorite dish. The jollof was full of spice and flavor, and comes with plantains and your choice of protein. The chicken was super tender and fell off the bone; doused in flavorful sauce, the flavors were robust and hearty. - Peanut Soup with Rice Ball (3.6/5): I wasn’t a huge fan of the peanut soup here… It wasn’t as peanut buttery as I would’ve hoped, but I recommend getting the rice ball with it, if you order this dish. It’s slightly sweet on its own, and really soaked up the flavor of the soup. - Waakye with Beef (4/5): This was pretty good and flavorful. The beef was tender and the rice and beans were flavorful. — Price (relative to peers): 4.3/5 Food: 4.4/5 Ambience: 4.3/5 Service: 4.8/5 Overall Value: 4.5/5

This place offers you the rare opportunity to taste Ghanian food. Some dishes are very spicy so be careful. I highly recommend anything with plantains. The only reason I gave it fewer stars is that they don't have prices on the menu and I kinda suspect they just pick a number based on how you look. I had an appetizer that cost the same as an entree and was definitely overpriced. But, it was all delicious!

The atmosphere isn't much to write home about, but the food is very good and authentic. They were supposed to open at noon and didn't open the door until almost 1:00. It would be a good idea to call before showing up.
